Unrestricted Endowment Account
This is an expendable account, meaning that the funds may be spent on items and events approved jointly by the Department and the University of Kansas Endowment Association (KUEA). Unless otherwise specified, all donations are placed in this account. It is used to support annual events (e.g., a May Undergraduate Recognition Ceremony, an August New Graduate Student Dinner), receptions (e.g., after colloquia, for retirements), staff recognition (e.g., Administrative Assistant’s Day, anniversaries), student activities (e.g., journals, books, and supplies for the Baer Library; posters for research presentations), and gifts for special occasions (e.g., flowers for births, illnesses). It may also be used to supplement the other expendable accounts.
Donald M. Baer Faculty Award Fund
This is an endowed account, meaning that the fund’s principal cannot be expended. However, up to 50% of the interest the fund accrues annually may be spent for the purpose stipulated by the donor(s) who established the fund. Neither the fund nor its purpose may be altered without permission from the original donor(s) or their representatives. The Baer Fund was established in 2002 with a gift from the Department’s faculty members. It currently stands at $40,000. Once fully funded at $250,000, it will support a half-time graduate research assistant for a current faculty member.
Helen Jedlicka Mandigo Student Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was generously established in 2004 by Helen Jedlicka Mandigo, a graduate of the Department of Home Economics, with a gift of $25,000. The fund provides “scholarship assistance for a deserving undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in the department…The scholarship is based on need and merit, with an emphasis given to an individual who has shown strong potential for future participation in social leadership roles.”
Multicultural Scholars Program Fund
This expendable fund is used to attract, retain, and support a greater diversity among our undergraduate majors (e.g., African American, Hispanic, Native American, first generation college students, and students with disabilities). Each student receives up to a $1000 annual scholarship, as well as support for program expenses (e.g., social events, tutoring). The fund currently supports 9 students; we hope, eventually, to support 20.
Flora E. Thompson Fund
Flora Thompson was the Department’s much beloved first administrative officer. This expendable fund was established in her name by her family and friends. It supports graduate student travel to national conferences.
Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award Fund
This expendable fund covers the costs of transportation, lodging, meals, an honorarium, a plaque, and a reception for undergraduate and graduate Department alumni who have distinguished themselves in basic or applied research, program administration, or service and leadership that has improved the human condition.
General Undergraduate Fellowship Fund
The Department currently has four undergraduate specialty areas, most with options (see below). This expendable fund supplements the funds in each area so that one Fellowship can be offered annually in each of them.
Undergraduate Fellowship in Early Childhood
This expendable fund awards $1000 annually to an undergraduate in the Early Childhood Specialty area, which area includes early childhood autism intervention, early childhood education and intervention, and early childhood research.
Undergraduate Fellowship in Youth Development and Juvenile Justice
This expendable fund awards $1000 annually to an undergraduate in the Youth Development and Juvenile Justice Specialty area, which area includes delinquency and juvenile justice.
Undergraduate Fellowship in Adults with Disabilities
This expendable fund awards $1000 annually to an undergraduate in the Adults with Disabilities Specialty area, which area includes adults with developmental disabilities and applied gerontology.
Undergraduate Fellowship in Community Health and Development
This expendable fund awards $1000 annually to an undergraduate in the Community Health and Development Specialty area, which area includes community leadership, health promotion, and independent living.
Any of the Department’s expendable funds, except those for the individual undergraduate specialty areas, may be permanently endowed with a donation of $30,000 or more. Each $30,000 generates about $1,250 in interest annually to support the fund, award, scholarship, or fellowship. Individual undergraduate specialty areas are not endowed because they may change due to evolving societal needs, as well as to changes in the Department’s ability to support them. The General Undergraduate Fellowship Fund, however, may be endowed to support these areas in general. The funds in any discontinued specialty area revert to the General Undergraduate Fellowship Fund. The funds in any discontinued expendable account revert to the Department’s Unrestricted Endowment Account.
All funds are administered jointly by the Department chairperson and the KUEA. All awards, scholarships, and fellowships are administered by the Department’s Awards Committee.
