Research Interests

Behavioral Economics Lab

My research is designed to investigate processes underlying impulsive decision making and how these processes influence the development and maintenance of substance abuse and pathological gambling. Currently, students in my lab are developing an animal model of gambling in both rats and pigeons. Historically, my research has been funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Students interested in pursuing basic research careers in behavior analysis, behavioral economics, psychopharmacology, and/or behavioral decision making are encouraged to contact Dr. Madden via email to discuss financial support available at KU.

Service and Professional Interests

Currently I serve as the Associate Editor of the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. In addition, I am currently or have been a member of the Editorial Board of journals such as Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology, and The Behavior Analyst. I also serve as a grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health (NIDA), on the board or directors for the Society for the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, on the executive committee of APA Division 25, as the Awards Chair for Division 25 of the APA, and am past president (2005) of the Mid-American Association for Behavior Analysis.
